Make sure you have enough tread on your tires. Without a proper amount of tread, you will not be safe driving in wet conditions (rain or snow). The easiest test you can do to check your tread is the Penny test. If you stick a penny with Abe Lincoln’s head pointed down in between your tires’ tread grooves and you are able to see the top of his hair, you do not have enough tread for safe driving. If part of Abe’s head is covered, you should be OK!

With the weather getting colder by the minute (or so it seems), drivers who must deal with dropping temperatures need to take extra measures to ensure their safety. Of course, it is a good idea to prepare your vehicle in all the practical ways (preparing your tires, topping off fluids, and having an snow-brush handy), but it is also in your best interest to be prepared for any type of emergencies that you might find yourself in. If you’re in the Hickory area and are finding yourself a little more cold, or if you will be travelling far and wide to northern regions this holiday season where it will be even colder, we want you to know how to prepare a winter survival kit for your car.

Our first tip is to keep jumper cables in your car at all times. The battery in your car is affected by cold weather, and it can lose energy. So, if you don’t want to find yourself stuck without a live battery, you should keep these handy, because even if someone driving by is able to provide their set, you’ll only have half of a solution.
