Does my Mazda need a transmission flush?

Having a vehicle means needing to do a lot to keep it in good condition and operating smoothly.  This includes regular maintenance and having your vehicle serviced when it’s needed.  There are many different services that most vehicles need, but does my Mazda need a transmission flush?

Mazda vehicles that are equipped with SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY benefit from having lifetime transmission fluid.

Meaning that you only need to change your Mazda’s transmission fluid when a major transmission component, or the entire system, needs to be replaced.  Older Mazda models without SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY have recommendations on service intervals which includes the transmission system, you can find these out in your owner’s manual under “Maintenance and Care.”

Mazda recommends having a professional inspect your vehicle if the transmission fluid is dark, dirty or a burnt smell.

Transmission FAQs

mechanic adding transmission fluid to a carWhat is transmission fluid?

Transmission fluid lubricates the various components of a vehicle’s transmission system.  It also can clean and protect the metal from wear, condition the gaskets, increase the rotational speed and temperature range.  Depending on the type of fluid, it can also act as a coolant in vehicles with automatic transmission.  You can find out the recommended type of transmission fluid for your vehicle in your owner’s manual.

What is a transmission flush?

This is typically a regular maintenance process where all of the transmission fluid is removed, or flushed, from the system and new fluid is run through it.  There is a special machine that is also used to remove the sludge and dirt that can get in the transmission system.

When should I flush my transmission?

The average transmission flush is recommended to take place every 30,000-miles.  Some mechanics say that you can have it done every 2-years or about 24,000-miles.  You can find your vehicle’s recommended time period in your owner’s manual.
